Small business owners might benefit from turning social media into shopping platforms

Most small business owners are aware of the potential of social media sites to connect consumers to potential clients. But one problem many face is assessing the efficacy of social media in translating into sales.

Now, a report from Inc.com suggests business owners turn their social media marketing platforms into ecommerce web hosting opportunities by creating storefronts on Facebook fan pages. This will allow users to make purchases without ever navigating away from the social networks.

Pampers has demonstrated the potential success of this strategy with its recent diaper promotion. The company sold a new line of diapers through its fan page and sold a limited supply of 1,000 packages in under an hour.

While the success of this campaign would indicate that social media sales platforms are quickly rising, the source says the strategy is still in the frontier stage.

With the Globe and Mail reporting that Canadians' internet use exceeds television time, entrepreneurs might find Facebook fans will adapt easily to this new strategy. Starting a Facebook shopping platform in the near future might mean a share of the network's 400 million users will be business customers.
